Biography

Born in Antony, France on 19.2.1966, he studied literature and communications before attending the film school Femis in
Paris and later the Tisch School of the Arts in New York. He has been making documentaries ever since, but has also worked
as an assistant director at the opera. His film AU-DELA DE LA HAINE, about the murder of a gay man by three skinheads,
won the Teddy Award at the 2006 Berlinale.

Chanel, Dior, Armani, Kenzo, Balenciaga … in spite of globalisation, Paris remains the most important fashion centre of all and the city is still a magnet for designers from all over the world. One of fashion’s most long-standing and revered proponents is Yves Saint Laurent. In 2002, he decided to
retire from the fashion business. At his farewell show, which was attended by tout Paris, his muse and one of his most loyal customers, Catherine Deneuve, sang a heart-rending song to wish him goodbye. This film describes the last two years in the career of this brilliant fashion designer. Born in Oran in 1936, Saint Laurent began working for Dior as earlyas the 1950s, making a name for himself in the 60s for the collections he
created with his business collaborator and life partner Pierre Bergé. His career as an iconic stylist really took off when he began designing prêt-àporter fashion alongside haute couture. Since then, Yves Saint Laurent the man has gradually disappeared behind the label YSL. Director Olivier Meyrou: “Saint Laurent has long since become a living legend, a piece of history, who continues to inspire students of fashion all over
the world. He is a unique artist whose personality and life are, however, a mystery. Behind the legend lies a bond with his partner that is strong and profound. This film was made over a period of two years of intense observation – tempered by passion, respect, distance and fascination.”

Geboren am 19.2.1966 in Antony, Frankreich. Er studierte Literatur- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, bevor er die
Filmschule Femis in Paris und später in New York die Tisch School of the Arts besuchte. Seither dreht er Dokumentarfilme. Außer -
dem ist er als Regieassistent an der Oper tätig gewesen. Sein Film AU-DELA DE LA HAINE, über den Mord dreier Skinheads an
einem Homosexuellen, erhielt den Teddy-Preis bei der Berlinale 2006.

Einer, der zu den Alteingesessenen zählt, ist Yves Saint Laurent. 2002 zog er sich aus dem Modegeschäft zurück. Beim Abschiedsdefilée, an dem tout Paris teilnahm, sang Catherine Deneuve, eine seiner Musen und treuesten Kundinnen, ein herzergreifendes Abschiedslied. Die letzten zwei Jahre in der Karriere dieses brillanten Modeschöpfers zeichnet der Film nach. Schon in den 50er Jahren für Dior tätig, machte sich der 1936 in Oran geborene Saint Laurent in den 60er Jahren vor allem
durch Kollektionen einen Namen, die in Zusammenarbeit mit seinem Lebens ge fährten, dem Geschäftsmann Pierre Bergé, entstanden. Als er neben Haute Couture auch rêt-à-porter-Mode entwarf, wurde er endgültig zu einer Stil-Ikone, bis der Mensch Yves Saint Laurent allmählich hinter dem Label YSL verschwand. sich Modeschüler von ihm inspirieren. Er ist ein einzigartiger Künstler. Seine Persönlichkeit aber, sein Leben, ist ein Geheimnis. Hinter der Legende verbirgt sich eine starke und tiefe Verbindung mit seinem Partner. Der Film entstand in zwei Jahren intensiver Beobachtung – mit Leidenschaft, Res pekt, Distanz und Faszination.“
