Masala Mama
(See also: TEDDY TODAY Feb. 16, 2010)Seng, der Sohn eines Lumpensammlers, möchte gern Comics mit Superhelden zeichnen, sehr zum Missfallen seines Vaters. Um zu Lernen, besorgt er sich hier und dort Comic-Heftchen. Als er dem gutmütigen Händler aus dem »Mama-Shop« eines stiehlt, wird er von dessen heimlichen Schwarm erwischt: einem Polizisten. Der Händler hilft Seng noch mal aus der Patsche, doch ein Unglück kommt selten allein: Sengs Vater steht plötzlich in dem indischen Lädchen und sieht seinen Jungen mit dem schwulen Verkäufer. Seng hat nur noch eine Chance, das Unheil abzuwenden: Die Flucht in die Phantasie … Michael Kam nahm 2009 am BERLINALE TALENTE CAMPUS teil, bei dem schließlich die Idee zu diesem Film entsteht.
Seng, the son of a »Ragman« comics collector, would like to draw comic book super heros, to the distress of his father. In order to learn, he picks up comic books. The day he steals one from a mom and pop store, he is caught by a police officer. The storekeeper helps Seng out of trouble, but trouble seldom comes alone: Seng’s father suddenly shows up at the Indian shop and sees his boy hanging around with the gay storekeeper. Seng has only one more way out, to flee into fantasy … Michael Kam took place in the 2009 BER LINALE TALENT CAMPUS where the idea for this film was formed.
