Biography

Róbert I. Douglas was born in Reykjavik on 4.6.1973. The son of an Icelandic civil servant and a teacher, he grew up in Ireland. He first came into con tact with film using his parent’s Super 8 camera and video camera. He later attended the Media School in Northern Ireland for two years. He made his debut as a feature film director in the year 2000 with the feature-length version of his award-winning 1998 short film, ÍSLENSKI DRAUMURINN.

Synopsis/english

Óttar Thor is the undisputed star of Icelandic premier league football team, KR. All hell breaks loose one day when he innocently tells reporters about his homosexuality. Moreover, not only did he neglect to inform his ex-beau­ty queen wife and their teenage son about his decision to come out, it also completely slipped his mind to tell even his fellow team-members. The ensuing crisis is the final straw for a family already beset with problems and, at KR, Óttar suddenly finds himself on the list of substitutes. For this reason, the much-celebrated star decides to quit. But it is not long before he finds himself the centre of attention again, this time for a team of gay amateur football players, whose games he has been invited to watch by an old friend. The gay team’s new celebrity intake soon makes them talk of the town, but the club’s sporting abilities are in sharp contrast to their popularity. Most other teams refuse even to play friendly matches with them, so worried are they of being considered gay. Óttar’s son is also having trouble accepting his father’s homosexuality. In the end, KR’s manager decides that he simply can’t do without his star player. After much deliberation, Óttar agrees to return to his old club – on one condition: that KR play a game against the gay team. Róbert I. Douglas: “My film shows what it means to be gay in a society that values machismo, such as Icelandic society with its stereotypical image of men as hard-working, hard-drinking fishermen.”

Synopsis/deutsch

Beim isländischen Erstligisten KR ist Óttar Thor der unangefochtene Star. Als er ahnungslos Reportern von seiner Homosexualität erzählt, löst er einen Sturm der Entrüstung aus. Selbstverständlich hat er vor seinem Eingeständnis weder daran gedacht, seiner Ex-Beautyqueen-Ehefrau noch ihrem pubertierenden Sohn oder gar seiner Mannschaft von seinem Coming-Out zu erzählen. Der Wirbel, den er jetzt verursacht, gibt der krisengeplagten Kleinfamilie den Rest und beim KR sitzt Óttar ab sofort nur noch auf der Ersatzbank. Der einst gefeierte Star kündigt und findet sich kurz darauf als besondere Attraktion einer schwulen Amateurfußballmannschaft wieder, zu deren Spielen ihn ein alter Freund eingeladen hat. Mit ihrem prominenten Neuzugang werden die Kicker zwar umgehend zum Stadtgespräch, doch steht die sportliche Leistung des Teams im krassen Widerspruch zur erlangten Popularität – zumal andere Mannschaften sogar Freundschaftsspiele verweigern. Die Kicker haben Angst, als schwul zu gelten. Auch Óttars Sohn kann sich mit der Homosexualität seines Vaters nicht abfinden. Schließlich möchte der KR-Manager auf den einstigen Star der Mannschaft doch nicht verzichten. Nach einigem Hin und Her willigt Óttar ein, unter einer Bedingung zu seinem alten Verein zurückzukehren: Der KR soll sich verpflichten, gegen das Schwulenteam anzutreten. Róbert I. Douglas: „Mein Film erklärt, was es bedeutet, als Schwuler in einer so vom Machismo geprägten Gesellschaft wie der isländischen zu leben, samt ihrem stereotypen Bild vom Mann als hart arbeitendem und ebenso hart trinkendem Fischer.“
