Diese virtuelle Realität wird von so genannten Identitätseinheiten bewohnt, welche dieselben Eigenschaften wie Menschen besitzen. Fred Stiller, der zum Leiter des Projektes aufsteigt, erfährt von einem Mitarbeiter Günther Lause, dass sein Vorgänger kurz vor seinem Tod eine ungeheure Entdeckung machte. Als Stiller nachzuforschen beginnt, verschwindet Lause. Niemand im Institut will ihn gekannt haben. Der Zweiteiler ist zum ersten Mal seit 37 Jahren in einer restaurierten Fassung wieder zu sehen. In a not too distant future, scientists at the Institute for Cybernetics develop a computer. It can simulate a world that perfectly resembles the real world. This virtual reality is populated by identity units, which have the same properties as people. Fred Stiller, who is promoted to head of the project, learns from a colleague, Günther Lause, that his predecessor made a terrible discovery shortly before his death. When Stiller begins to research, Lause disappears. No one in the institute seems to have known him. After 37 years, parts one and two will be shown for the first time in a restored version.
